TL Wheel Used in TL Facilitation Training
Transformative learning theory is just that, a theory of how adults learn. It is not a training or teaching model. It is a concept that is owned by no-one, though emeritus professor at Teachers College, Columbia University Jack Mezirow still holds the credit for discovering and nurturing the theory.
TL Facilitation is a training model which inherits its power from transformative learning along with ideas from important teachers such as Carl Rogers and Malcolm Knowles. I created this training model primarily as a model or framework from which I can work and later brought it to others to incorporate into their own style of teaching. Now in my retirement, I teach it to others.
The first three essentials listed to the left are integral parts of my teaching model and are the corner stones of transformative learning. Group dynamics came to me through a self discovery process which brought all the first three essentials together for me.
Some of the essentials like number 15 on the list, fun, and use of projects, role plays, and case studies also came to me through self learning but are clearly recognized as essentials in many other teaching models that exist.
Some, like the use of energy in a class room are what I call undeveloped areas of learning theory. I speculate suspect to see much more come out in years to come regarding how energy plays a role in teaching.
Finally, what I want to emphasize is the importance in using some recognized form of teaching. Why? Because it provides a framework, a structure from which to work. To be good at what you do you must be passionate. To be passionate you must believe in it. To believe in something, you must understand it and that is what a philosophical teaching model can do for you. This is what I did in creating TL Facilitation. Use my model if you choose.
