An Opportunity to Critically Reflect on the Best Words Ever Written

 The Need

Why TL Facilitation? The need for a great self-empowering training program is painfully obvious. It was only a short 40 years ago or so when it first became obvious that our accepted forms of adult education were not working.

Malcolm KnowlesMalcolm Knowles, known as "The Father of Adult Learning", wrote a book in 1973 called: "The Adult Learner-A Neglected Species" and noted how the majority of adult learners were being denied the kind of teaching that had substance or produced results. That was because trainers and educators used the same old model that had been used for hundreds of years called "pedagogy". This pedagogy is a model whereby the teacher delivers information and the student is a passive listener.

Book Tellin Ain't TrainingIn today's classrooms not much has changed. According to Patricia Cranston, Professor at teachers college; most educators/trainers today do not even "see themselves as teachers of adult learners". In their award winning book entitled, “Telling Ain’t Training”, researchers Stolovitch and Keeps say, “When we enter the learning arena (today), we often see a return to the traditional, school based, teacher-centered models of instruction.”

It seems that educators have been slow to respond to the needs of adult learners as proven by those last quotes.. This is why most classroom experiences that you and I have had have been the boring teacher driven and teacher centered experiences where we have been expected to be the quite listener while the dissemination of information transpired.

Yes there is a great need for a new teaching model that will produce knowledge retention and substantive change in adult learners.

Why TL is the Answer

TL Facilitation as a teaching model that offers the best chance for change because it employs as its source the instruments of transformative learning theory such as critical reflection, disorienting dilemmas and rational discourse and so on.  These are the tools needed for adults because this is the way they learn best.

TL Facilitation invigorates the human soul by looking deeply into it and  through self discovery invites change. It examines long held ideas, sacred and secret repositories of self knowledge, and through new lenses it provides opportunities to rid oneself of prejudices and wrongly conceived ideas. Re-learning is what adults need to be engaged in and they accomplish this through TL Facilitation.

Only a teaching model with these conventions can bring about the needed change of the collective values and principles at the center of the worlds problems today. We as teachers should not be just passing along knowledge to adults. We can't afford to do just that any longer! We need to create results. We are creating meaningful change through what we are teaching when using TL Facilitation.

TL facilitation is a training model that inherits the tools of transformative learning theory and therefore it is the training model that earns our appreciation and acceptance as one for our age. adapt it into your training regime and see what happens!
